Assignment 1 requires the student to create a tower (>30cm, <100 Popsicle sticks & no glues allowed) where the tower will be tested with loads & efficiency will be calculated, formula as
below:
Efficiency= Height (cm) X Load (kg)/ mass (g)
Then after the load testing, an A3 bound report complete with visuals & sketches showing the
detailing and progressive work of the tower should be documented & submitted.
Modelling Progress:
REFLECTION:
In completion of Assignment 1, I have learned that in order to increase the efficiency of the
tower, it should be as high as possible by using minimum amount of Popsicle sticks. Me and
my group mates realized that in order for the tower to stand rigid & stable, a large base is
essential; so we decided to use a square base rather than a triangular one. In terms of the
connection in between the Popsicle sticks, we had used nails as main support & threads as
secondary support in order to make sure that the connection is secured enough to prevent
twisting & collapsing of the tower. Many problems we have encountered during the designing
process of the tower, such as the bracing methods, length of Popsicle sticks, etc to achieve the maximum load that the tower can withstand; and of cause arguments could not be avoided when opinions were given out. However, this is also what makes us to be tied in a team and solve
the problem together.
B.CON Assignment 2:
Assignment 2 requires the student to propose a building (solid / surface) and identify the structural system used in the building in a group. Then we were required to produce a model showing our understanding of the structures of the building. Individually, we have to do a 2-D detailed drawing of the parts of construction in the building complete with annotations & specifications to show our understanding on how the building is constructed.
REFLECTION:
In completion of Assignment 2, I have learned that the structural system of all buildings can be
classified into 3 types: Solid, Skeletal & Surface construction. Comparing the difference
between solid & surface construction make us understand that the loads & forces acting on the structural elements are different. By doing a model making of the building chosen also help us
in understanding the way of construction of the building in depth. During the model making
process, we realized that the strength, stability & stiffness do affect the whole mass of the
building because we have to understand every single part of the construction of the building.
