Studio Assignment 1: Journey of The 5 Senses

Assignment 1 is divided into 2 task; Task 1 requires the student to select 2 precedent studies 

for analysis (could be local, national / international examples); one should be pre- modern movement while another should be contemporary. Also one should be linear while another 

concentric.Task 2 requires the student to design a walk themed “ The journey of 5 senses” and 2 designs should be presented (linear & concentric).

REFLECTION:

In completion of assignment 1, I have learned the ability to translate feelings into my design. 

These poetic feelings are relatively important to make a design look lively as the visitors are 

able to feel the same feelings of the designer. This assignment main objective is to stimulate 

our creativity in translating feelings into a building through the use of 5 senses (visual, hearing, 

smell , taste & touch). These 5 senses are always helpful for a designer to design a space with ‘Soul’. Besides, also I’m now able to identify and explain the difference of spatial types in 

architecture, and the spatial use & experience the visitors are undergoing in a building. I 

understand how designers make use of the elements beside them, lighting, environment, 

atmosphere, etc. to create a space which they want the visitors to feel the same; for instance bycontrolling the lighting of a particular space (natural light source/ artificial lighting), visitors will 

feel differently.

Studio Assignemnt 2: Genius Loci, Site Analysis & Concept Development

Assignment 2 is divided into 2 task as well; Task 1 requires the students in a group of 5 to 

produce a Site Analysis of the particular chosen site of Labrador Nature Reserve. Task 2 

(individual) requires the student ti produce our personal interpretation of the macro site in the 

form of sketches. Then from the sketches, we were required to derived our own concept design

REFLECTION:

In completion of assignment 2, I have learned to derive a concept from may be a scene, an 

object, or may be a song, or anything. These were all related to feelings as well, which is 

already been focused on Assignment 1. The derived concept have to be somehow related to 

the historical background of the Labrador Nature Reserve, which is a famous harbour of 

Singapore in the olden days. Thus, the concept of mine is derived from a scene which I captured in Labrador Park, where a morning dew is falling of from the tip of a leaf onto the muddy 

ground. Here I have used a metaphoric expression in order to describe & relate back the scene with the history. The pure morning dew droplet (symbolizes Singapore) falls onto the muddy 

ground (symbolizes British). On the same time, there’s a bud like element which is half 

enclosing the liquid droplet (also symbolizes British). Thus, this might create a question mark tothe viewers; whether the British are trying to protect the Singaporeans during the war, or are 

they just trying to get some benefit of their own from Singapore, which can be seen from the 

root like structure engulfing the droplet. 

Studio Assignment 3: Visitor Interpretive Centre (VIC)

Assignment 3 requires the student to design a Visitor Interpretive Centre (VIC) which response to the site (site topography, history, socio- cultural events, etc.)

REFLECTION:

In completion of assignment 3, I have learned to generate a design based on the unique 

characteristics and conditions of the surrounding site context. Spatial organization & spatial 

quality is relatively important to bring out the feelings which a designer wants the visitors to feel. I understand that it is important to control the feelings of the visitors to be same with the designers thoughts rather than let them wander around with other feelings different from the designers.From here, we can know how much thought process had the designer put into his design in 

order to make people feel the same way as he is. It it true that the use of materials also helps in bringing out the spatial quality that a designer wants, for example using concrete creates a 

very solid & rigid feeling to the visitors but using timber will have a totally different feeling. Thus, it is rather important for a designer to consider the usage of material in a building before 

designing it.
