Assignment 1 requires the students to first choose a historical building of the era’s that they had chosen (Prehistoric, Gothic, Roman, Palladianism, Baroque & Rococo, etc.) in a group of 4 and then produce an essay communicating about the information of the building; such as the design ideas & the significant contribution to its culture. Students were required to answer a list of general questions as a guideline to assist ourselves in preparing the essay:
1. Who is the architect?
2. Where and when was the building built?
3. What is the form, or shape of the building?
4. What is the function or purpose of the building?
5. What materials / methods are used for construction?
6. What makes your building historically significant / meaningful?
7. How does the building reflect the spirit of the time and place for which it was built?
REFLECTION:
In completion of Assignment 1, I have learned to recognize the difference between the building styles in different periods; for instance, my group has chosen a historical building where our main style would be focusing on Baroque Style; however, the building itself is actually renovated twice and there is a blend of 2 other architectural styles in it (Romanesque & Gothic). Hence, it is rather necessary for us to understand the differences between all 3 styles before we can actually produce an essay communicating our ideas about the building (Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela).
Besides, I realized that the reason why different periods has its own unreplaceable style in terms of architecture is due to the way of living of that era. People from different era’s has different living style; not only physically different, but varies in mentality as well. For example, people living in the Gothic era’s were rather religious; where this is the reason why most of the buildings in that era has large glass windows set onto walls to allow maximum penetration of light into the building as ‘Light’ is considered something very mysterious, something own by the god during that period.
Hence, through this assignment I’m able to understand more about different culture in different era’s and how does the culture/ believes/ attitudes reflect the spirit of the buildings built during that period of time.

History Assignment 2: Analysis Presentation Board (Individual)
Assignment 2 requires the students to produce an A2 presentation board consist of drawings (floor plans, building sections, analysis diagrams and sketches) to communicate the depth of analysis of the building.
Analysis should include:
1. Concept analysis (building concept and/or architect concepts)
2. Building massing analysis (structure, geometry)
3. Circulation Analysis
4. Spatial Organization analysis (public vs. private, symmetry & balance, Unit to whole,
Repetitive to unique, Additive and subtractive, Hierarchy)
5. Building section analysis

REFLECTION:
After doing a thorough analysis on the building in order to complete Assignment 2, I now understand more about the interior structure of the building I’m doing; for instance, by looking at the plan, I am able to visualized the different components/ parts of interior spaces of the building (Portico de La Gloria, Holy Gate, The Nave & Crypt, etc.).
I realized that it is rather important to understand the spatial organization of a building we are working on as it is the soul of a building. Without spatial organization, there would not be a difference between public, semi- public & private spaces; without planning the spaces in a building thoroughly before constructing, the interior of the building would just look very hollow & void. Indirectly the spatial organization would always affect the circulation a little, no matter what is the intention of the spaces designed. To take an example, ‘The Nave’ of Santiago de Compostela which act as the place where pilgrims come to pray would be designed to be a public space where there were only columns standing around the building. It is not likely that the architect would design a wall/ partition in the middle of the ‘Nave’ in order to perform the same function as the column, which merely to act as a support.

History Assignment 3: Model Making of Historical Building (Group)
Assignment 3 requires the students to create a model using Balsa Timber to communicate our analysis of the building. The model can be either of the entire structure, or of a portion of the project that is of high significance which should be communicating the important structure, components, ideas and concepts of the building.

In completion of Assignment 3, I learned that the value of teamwork & patience is significant in life, realizing that the people in that era has great patience in constructing the building. To take an example, the Galicians were able to construct the Baroque style facade, ‘Facade del Obradoiro’ which is full of sculptures on the friezes. Engraving these sculptures one-by-one is not only time- consuming, but is also a piece of hard job to accomplish as every sculptures during that era were to be carved by human, not by producing it using machine.
