Architectural Design Studio 2, ARC1126

Studio Assignment 1: Famous People, Familiar Faces & Diagrammatic Abstraction

Assignment 1 requires the student to first produce a video of the selected architect & one of his/ her famous building. Then, we have to come up with a complete set of architectural drawing & models of the selected project. The models should be precise and informative to express the analysis of the ideas hidden in the project assigned.

REFLECTION:
After the completion of this assignment, I now have the ability to identify famous architects & their buildings; this is because students were not only required to do research on a particular architect, but were required also to have some basic understandings on the other architects as well. This can be done through presenting the buildings to other students through video; so that everyone can share the same informations & common knowledge on the famous architects. Besides, I’ve now gained some basic understanding on the basic architectural compositions of solids, planes, lines and frames as we’re required to translate our understandings on the particular building elements selected into some abstract models; but in the meanwhile, can still represent the building well. Through this method, we are trained to think creatively & are encouraged to develop our models more frequently to achieve better quality of work.

Studio Assignment 2A: Bay Watch (Pantai Kerachut)

Assignment 2A requires the students (in a group of 2) to design a life guard post for the purpose of monitoring/guarding. It shall include the activities of observing, resting, eating etc. in which furniture and equipment must fit and be incorporated with the spatial planning.

REFLECTION:

In completion of this assignment, I am now able to generate form and space through architectural conceptualization, with the emphasis on exploring the user requirement and simple spatial organization skills to develop an architectural proposition. Students were first required to come up with a set of drawings of the inspiration gained from the site visit. We were then trained to develop & transform these abstract drawings into 3D models. This helped me a lot in developing my ideas & to translate a 2D drawing into 3D objects better; in order to visualize the concept. Besides, I have learned how to combine to similar ideas and developed them in depth by including different architecture elements and also to respond to the site (weather, landscape, circulation, etc.) by making use of the information gained from the site analysis. This helps me a lot in understanding that a good design should not only emphasizes on its form, but should also respond to its surrounding & site context.

Studio Assignment 2B: Retreat House (Pantai Kerachut)

Assignment 2B requires the student to produce a design of a retreat house for the user selected (coastal guard/ ranger) using the same selected site (beach/ lake).

REFLECTION:

Assignment 2B requires the student to produce a design of a retreat house for the user selected (coastal guard/ ranger) using the same selected site (beach/ lake).
Throughout this assignment, I’ve learned to bring out my concept of the design not only by abstracting it, but also by selecting & applying the right materials to embody and enhance the sensory experience of the space. I realized that I would be able to create different atmosphere that would affect & influence the senses of an individual by using different materials; thus, I had chosen some reflective materials in order to enhance my building concept. Besides, I also understand that it is relatively important for an architect to always refer to the selected site during the design process because only through understanding the surrounding would an architect able to come up with a good & interesting design. I realized that there are so much difference when designing a building for oneself & designing for others (since studio 2 is about designing for a different user). When designing for a client, the first thing that a good architect has to understand is that the clients like & dislikes & develop the design from there. Its a totally different experience from designing a building for myself (in studio 1), as I have to understand the users needs & response to the site context as well.
